Château de Puyguilhem

Come and discover the elegant Renaissance lines of Puyguilhem Chateau, set in green surroundings 34km from Périgueux. It was built in the first third of the 16th century and inspired the great chateaux of the Loire valley.

Understanding Puyguilhem chateau

• The chateau of one of François I’s inner circle. Puyguilhem was built for Mondot de La Marthonie. A lawyer and President of Paris Parliament, he helped Louise of Savoy, the king’s mother, during the first Italian campaign when the king was kept far from court.

• Tracing the diffusion of the Italian model. Similarities with Bonnivet chateau, which no longer exists, suggest that some of the artists who worked there may have come to work at Puyguilhem. The chateaux at Assier and Montal in the neighbouring Quercy region partake of the same movement.
